Sunscreen blinds are roller blinds made from an open-weave fabric. They cut the glare, heat and UV coming through the glass, while you keep the view through the fabric by day.
How much they stop depends on how open the weave is.
We measure and fit sunscreen roller blinds across Sydney, as part of our custom blinds Sydney range.

Sunscreen blinds cut the glare and heat coming through your windows while you still see outside. Without them, you choose between closing a blockout and losing the view, or squinting at the TV and laptop all afternoon. West-facing glass also heats the room just when you want to use it.
An open weave solves that trade-off. It takes the edge off the sun and keeps the outlook, which makes these the sun blinds built for view retention.
Openness factor is the share of a sunscreen fabric that is open weave, and it sets the balance between view and sun control. The lower the number, the more glare and heat the blind stops, and the softer the view becomes.
| Openness | View out by day | Glare and sun control | Where it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1% | Softest view | Highest of the range | West-facing glass, home offices, TV rooms |
| 3% | Clear but muted | High | Living areas with strong afternoon sun |
| 5% | Clear view | Moderate to high | Living areas, kitchens |
| 10% | Most open view | Lowest of the range | Rooms with a view to keep and gentle sun |
Colour matters too. Dark colours generally give a clearer view through the fabric and less glare than light colours at the same openness, while lighter colours reflect more heat back out. Your consultant shows which openness options come in
each fabric.
Rooms with big glass and a view suit them, especially west-facing windows.
| Room or window | Why sunscreen suits it | Openness to ask about |
|---|---|---|
| West-facing living areas | Hard afternoon glare and heat, and a view to keep | Lower openness |
| Kitchens and family rooms | Daylight and a view of the yard | Middle openness |
| Home offices | Less screen glare, daylight kept | Lower openness, darker colour |
| Rooms with a view | The outlook is the point | Higher openness, darker colour |
| Bedrooms | Not alone: no night privacy or darkness | Pair with blockout |
In Sydney, west-facing rooms take low, hot afternoon sun in summer, which is where a lower openness earns its place. North-facing rooms take sun for much of the day.
Our sunscreen fabrics come in several ranges, from light neutrals to dark colours. Your consultant brings fabric samples to hold against your actual view. Sunscreen fabric is not used for roman blinds.
Sunscreen blinds come as a single roller blind, as half of a double roller, or motorised, and some rooms suit light filtering
instead.

A sunscreen blind and a blockout blind share one bracket. You get the view by day, then privacy and darkness at night. It is the answer for bedrooms and street-facing rooms.

Your sunscreen blinds can run on a Somfy motor, controlled by remote, wall switch or app. Wide or hard-to-reach windows then lower in one step. See how our motorised blinds work.

For rooms that need some privacy with the lights on and can give up the view. A solid translucent fabric softens the light, and our light filtering blinds page compares both in full.
Compare Light Filtering BlindsThey cut glare, slow fading and take the edge off afternoon heat, while leaving the view.
With the blind down, TVs and laptops are easier to see, and reading by a sunny window gets easier too.
Less UV reaches your skin by the window and your floors and furniture. That fade protection slows fading, so rugs and fabrics keep their colour longer.
Closed blinds reduce the heat gain a room picks up through sunny glass. Internal blinds work once the sun is through the glass, so for the hottest windows, see our outdoor blinds and awnings.

The price depends on your windows, so every quote is measured to your windows and written. You see the price and what it includes before you commit. Four things move it:
No. With lights on inside, people outside can see in. For privacy at night, pair the sunscreen with a blockout blind on double roller blinds. You keep the view by day and lower the blockout after dark.
It depends on the openness factor and colour: the lower the openness, the more it blocks. This is not arithmetic, so a 5% fabric does not automatically stop the rest. Any figure must come from the fabric maker's testing of that exact fabric.
Yes. They suit hard afternoon sun. Choose a lower openness and a darker colour for the most glare control. For the hottest glass, add external shading with our outdoor blinds and awnings.
Yes, by day. You see through the weave, more clearly with darker colours and higher openness. At night, with lights on inside, the view reverses and people outside can see in.
Sunscreen keeps the view and cuts glare by day. Blockout blinds give darkness and privacy day and night, but hide the view. A double roller blind gives you both on one window.
Sunscreen is an open weave you see through, and it keeps the view. Light filtering blinds use a solid translucent fabric you cannot see through, which softens light and gives some privacy.
Usually, yes. Sunscreen, sun screen, solar and mesh blinds are names for the same open-weave roller blind. Look at the mesh weave and openness, because those decide how much view and glare control you get.
Yes. They can run on Somfy motors, controlled by a remote, wall switch or app. Our motorised blinds let wide, high or hard-to-reach windows lower in one step.
It depends on your windows, so every quote is measured and written. Window size, fabric range, recess or face fitting, and a chain or motor all change the price. Your quote shows what is included.
No. They reduce the heat a room picks up through sunny glass, but an internal blind works after the sun has passed through the glass. For the hottest glass, external shading such as outdoor blinds and awnings does more.
