The frame holds the panels in the window. An L frame sits on the face of the window reveal, the recessed opening around the glass. A Z frame steps out from the reveal to clear window handles or a shallow recess. A recess fit mounts inside the opening for a flush look, while a face fit mounts over the surrounding trim when the recess is too shallow. To tilt the blades, you use a tilt rod, a thin bar down the front of the panel, or a hidden tilt mechanism at the back on the materials that offer it. A mid rail, also called a divider rail, runs across a tall panel. It lets you tilt the top and bottom sections separately.
Hinged plantation shutters swing open like doors and suit most windows. Sliding plantation shutters run on a track inside the home, which works for wide openings and sliding doors.
