A sheer and a blockout curtain on one double track, each drawn on its own, made to measure and fitted in your home. Book a Free Measure & Quote.
Sheer and blockout curtains are two curtains on one double track: a light sheer for soft daylight and daytime privacy, and a blockout curtain for darkness and night privacy. A double track is two tracks side by side, one per curtain.
We call them dual curtains and make them to measure for Sydney homes, starting with a free measure and quote.
Sheer and blockout curtains solve it: a sheer for soft daylight and a blockout for darkness on one double track.
A sheer alone will not darken a room, and a blockout alone makes it dark by day. A bedroom needs darkness for sleep and soft light in the morning. A street-facing living room needs privacy by day and at night. A sunny room needs the sheer for glare and the blockout for the hottest hours.
Layered curtains give you both. Most homes leave the sheer across all day, then draw the blockout at night, and open both for the view. Double curtains, also called curtains with sheers or sheer curtains with blockout, put both on one window.
A double track holds two curtains, one behind the other, and each runs on its own track so you can draw one, both or neither.
| Track | Holds | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Front Track (Room Side) | The curtain agreed at your measure | The layer you see from the room |
| Back Track (Window Side) | The other curtain | The layer against the glass |
| Both Tracks | Fixed to the ceiling or wall | Each curtain draws independently |
That is how to layer sheer and blockout curtains. The window needs room above for the double curtain track, and room either side for both curtains to stack back, meaning the space they take up when open. The measure also checks clearance from handles and the reveal depth, which is how deep the window recess is.
Fullness is how much fabric goes into each metre of track, set for each layer. A track does the job of a double curtain rod and lets both curtains glide. Light can still show at the edges and top, so a ceiling fix or a pelmet reduces light gaps.
Both give two layers at one window. Curtains are softer and hold more warmth, while a double roller blind is compact and sits inside or on the window frame.
| Dual curtains | Double roller blind | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft folds framing the window | Flat, tailored fabric |
| Space needed | Room above and either side | Inside the frame or on its face |
| Insulation | Two fabric layers hold warmth | Lighter insulation at the glass |
| Rooms that suit it | Bedrooms and living rooms with side space | Tight windows with little side wall |

Most windows take a sheer and a blockout curtain on a double track, and where a second curtain will not fit, a blockout
blind behind a sheer does the same job.
The standard dual system: a sheer and a blockout curtain on one double track, each drawn on its own and made to measure. Sheer blockout curtains suit bedrooms and living rooms that need soft light by day and darkness at night.

A blockout roller blind sits in the window with a sheer curtain in front. Sheer curtains and blockout blinds suit shallow sides, windows with little stack back room, or rooms that already have blockout blinds. A blind looks flatter than a curtain. Read more in our layering guide.

Already have sheers or blockouts? You may not need to replace them. A second track can often go beside the existing one, if there is room, and the measure checks this before you order.
Ask about adding a layerPick the blockout for the room’s colour and the sheer to soften it, with the same heading on both so the folds line up.
One window gives you soft light by day and darkness at night.
The blockout comes across at night for a darker room, with the fitting reducing light at the edges and top.
The sheer blurs the view in by day, and the blockout gives full privacy at night.
Draw one layer, both or neither for soft light, darkness or the full view.

Every order includes a free measure and quote, both curtains made to your measurements, and the double track fitted.
It takes four steps from booking to installation.
Both tracks can be motorised, and where each track has its own motor, the sheer and the blockout open and close separately. See our motorised curtains page for the options.
Two fabrics, two headings and a double track cost more than one curtain, and a measured quote is the only accurate figure. Five things move the price:

It depends on how you use the window, and your consultant agrees on the order with you at the measure. The choice comes down to the look you want for the room, how much light gaps matter, and which layer you draw most often.
Yes. You need a double track, or two tracks side by side, fixed to the ceiling or wall. Your consultant recommends the track and fixing for your window and includes it in your written quote.
Often, yes, and you do not need to replace what you have. A second track can be added beside the existing one if there is room above and beside the window, which the measure checks.
It depends on the window. Curtains give softness and more insulation, while a double roller blind is compact and suits windows with little room on either side. We offer both, and our double roller blinds page explains the blind option.
Yes, in most cases. Each track can take its own motor, so the sheer and the blockout are controlled separately. Your consultant confirms the controls for your window, and our motorised curtains page covers the options.
Yes, they are the same product. The first spelling is the American term and "blockout" is the Australian one. Both describe a sheer for daylight paired with a curtain that blocks light, hung together at one window.
The price depends on width, drop, both fabrics, headings and the double track, and every quote is measured to your windows. You get a written price at the free measure. Our guide to curtain pricing in Sydney explains the costs.
Most likely, yes. You do not need an unusually large window. What matters is room above for a double track and room on either side for both curtains to stack back, and the measure checks both before you order.
Your consultant confirms the lead time from order to installation with your written quote. It depends on the two fabrics and headings you choose, so you know the timing before you place your order.
They can help. A blockout curtain drawn at night helps hold warmth in the room, and a pelmet or ceiling track reduces air movement at the top. How much it helps depends on the fabrics and the fit at your window.
